{31 Days to a Brand New Room}
Day 3: De-junk & Deep Clean

If you're joining us for the first time today, this is day 3 of a 31 day series about how to give a room in your home a brand new look, from top to bottom, completely DIY.

So, this is probably my least favorite day in any room re-do that we do.  Try as I might to keep a super clean and tidy home, there is nothing quite like moving the bed {or the couch or the fridge, depending on the room}to prove that I'm not really doing a great job.  The cleaning/prep day is all work and no new-room glory, but it's worth it.  I'm not even going to show you any pictures today.  It was just too horrifying when I got right down to it.  This particular room went waaaayyyyy beyond the normal cast-off socks and dust bunnies lurking underneath the day-to-day-living mess.  Soooo disturbing.

The point is, whether I'm just giving it a fresh coat of paint or a complete overhaul, I always like to start a room makeover with a nice fresh, blank canvas.  I like to take all the books off the shelves and put all the clutter and tchotchkes in boxes, dusting as I go.  I take everything off the walls and wipe them down.  I move out as much furniture as possible because I HATE working around stuff -- climbing over furniture and boxes to get where I need to be.  Major pet peeve of mine.  I'm lucky enough to have a small hallway and a corner of my boys' bedroom  to use as a holding cell for a few days while I get some of the major projects done.  Finally, I take this opportunity to shed some extra weight in the room.  I make a box of stuff to donate and haul out all the trash.  Why do we hold onto meaningless school papers and Halloween candy from last year?  Why?! Once I get as much out of the room as possible, I clean the floor and scrub the baseboards.  I dust the blinds and anything else that isn't really in my regular cleaning rotation.

By the end of the day {and it did take all day}, the room was already feeling better because it was fresh and clean.  Still in need of a makeover, but So. Much. Better.  With all that work behind us, we're ready to start on the first major new element in the room -- the planked accent wall treatment.  I hope you'll come back to see how it works out!

  1. I'll come back every day to see what you do in this room. I hope your daughter helps you, too. I'm looking forward to seeing all the results, but don't be afraid and really do show us some photos. We won't fingerpoint, because every home has these corners... ;)

    1. Thanks! Sydney has actually helped a lot in there, which has been fun for both of us. There will be a lot more photos in upcoming posts, I promise!
