Hey there! I feel like it's high time for a furniture makeover up in here, don't you? We always joke that nothing comes into our house without getting painted or slipcovered. It's funny because it's true. I love to scrounge thrift stores for pieces of furniture to breathe new life into. I happened upon this little side table at Goodwill several months ago and almost passed it up because it was a whopping $15. {That's a little rich for my cheapskate blood. Whatever.}
Brent ended up talking me into it because we both saw the potential. Plus, we needed a little table for the end of our couch and $15 isn't really that much money. We would just forgo a couple lunches at Taco Bell to make up for it. We brought it home and there it sat, matching nothing we owned and looking all pathetic and needy. For the past six months.
This weekend I was in the mood for a project so I dragged this little table outside and started sanding away. It had a really shiny, almost lacquered finish on it so I tried to remove as much of that as possible to help the new paint really adhere. {As I was sanding I found the original $215 price tag. I feel pretty good about my $15 now.} Once I felt like it was sufficiently sanded, it was time to paint. Here is where you could {and probably should} start with a coat of primer. But that's not how I roll. Just sayin'. Do what you think is best.
I just went straight for my can of spray paint -- Valspar's Hubble House Golden Maize. It's the same color I used for my vintage scale makeover. If you're looking for a perfect buttery yellow, this is it. I had most of a can leftover from that project and I bought one more. Both cans were completely empty when I was finished and, honestly, it could probably have used one more coat, but I wasn't going to go back to Lowe's so I decided it was good enough.
Once the paint was dry, I used a stencil and some acrylic paint to put a little bird detail on the front. That raised panel was just screaming for something to be painted there. My kids enjoyed teasing me about "putting a bird on it". Sometimes they just don't get it. Ignoring their mockery, I used a fine grit sand paper to rough up all the edges and make it not look so new.
To finish it all up, I gave it a good coat of paste wax, just like I did on my chalk painted kitchen cabinets. It makes the finish smooth, "like buttah". So beautiful. Here it is in all its finished glory:
And another before so you don't have to scroll all the way up to the top again:
I'm loving how the carved detail really has a chance to shine in the finished piece. It's so much simpler and brighter now, which is perfect for the cottage-y style of our home. Also, don't ask me why we kept our magazines in a basket on top of that table before. It actually opens up so we can keep the magazines inside of it and use the top for a lamp or something pretty. Or leave it empty and uncluttered, which is like - phew!- my favorite thing ever.
I realize painted furniture is not for everybody, but I adore it. What do you think? Join me later this week for a delicious family dinner recipe that my kids love, some super easy craft ideas, and a headwrap tutorial.
