DIY Casserole Carrier

I find myself toting a lot of hot dishes around -- church pot luck dinners, friendly get-togethers, meals for people who are sick, you name it.  I can't believe it has taken me so long to make a casserole carrier to make things easier on myself.  I got some adorable fabrics and cotton webbing from Wholeport and decided that today was going to finally be the day!

Supplies

2 yards of fabric {I used 1 yard each of two coordinating prints -- this black and gray damask for the outside and this polka dot for the inside.}
2 ¼ yards Insul-Bright insulated batting {you will have leftovers to make a few hot pads!}
Velcro

Cut two pieces of Insul-Bright:  a 15" x 30" piece and a 12" x 40" piece.  Cut each fabric into two pieces:  a 16" x 31" piece and a 13" x 41" piece.

1. Lay out one piece of fabric right side up.  Lay the coordinating fabric of the same size right side down on top of it.  Finally, place one piece of Insul-Bright on top of the two fabrics, with 1/2" border of fabric all the way around.  Pin in place and sew on top of the Insul-Bright around the perimeter {with the edge of the presser foot lined up with the edge of the Insul-Bright}, leaving a 4-5 inch opening to turn right side out.  Repeat for second piece.

2.  Clip the corners and turn fabrics right side out with the Insul-Bright sandwiched in between.  Press the edges and make sure the corners are nice and pointy.  Pin the opening shut and top stitch all the way around.  Repeat for second piece.  You will now have two rectangles -- a longer, thinner piece that will wrap around your casserole dish the from end to end, and a shorter, fatter one that will wrap around from side to side.

Set your casserole dish in the center of the shorter, fatter piece and wrap the edges around it {as it will be used when it's finished}.  Use a piece of chalk or pencil to lightly mark the top edge of the casserole dish on each side.  This will show you where to stop sewing the handles in the next step . . .

3.  Cut a piece of cotton webbing 82" long.  Overlap the ends and stitch closed with a zig-zag stitch to for a complete circle.  Mark the point on the circle exactly opposite the stitching on the circle.  {This will help you keep your two handles the same length.}

Find the center of your bottom piece {the shorter, fatter one}.  Pin the cotton webbing to the bottom, lining up the two points you marked with the center line.  With webbing 3" away from fabric edge on each side, pin between the chalk lines you marked in the last step, then sew in place.

4.  Lay out the bottom piece with lining side up.  Fold the longer, thinner piece in half and line up with bottom piece as shown in picture 4.

5.  Fold the longer, thinner piece out flat and pin in place.  Sew around the perimeter of the area where the two layers overlap as shown in picture 5.

6.  Cut two pieces of Velcro 6 inches long.  Place your casserole dish in the center of the carrier and wrap inside flaps {the longer, thinner ones} around it.  Decide where you want your Velcro to be and pin in place.  You want it to fit snugly, but not be too tight. Then wrap the outer flaps {the ones with the handles} around and pin Velcro in place on those flaps, too.  Stitch Velcro in place.

All finished!  The whole project only took a couple of hours from start to finish and it is awesome!!  Not only will this handy carrier make it easier to transport food, it will also keep the food warm.  {Plus it's really, REALLY cute, but that is less important. Only by a little, though.}

The Insul-Bright lining makes the carrier like one giant pot holder, reducing your risk of burning yourself.  The casserole dish fits nice and snug right inside the flaps so if you cover it with foil it won't spill either.  Love that!

These handy carriers would make awesome bridal shower or housewarming gifts!  Need some ideas of what to carry inside your cute new carrier?  Check out my recipes page for some yummy options!

Have a great day!
